Main Gauge: The Union Pacific Railroad (UP) Series 4000 steam locomotives, better known as the "Big Boy", are some of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives in the world. The locomotives were mainly used for pulling freight trains through the Rocky Mountains. The locomotives have an axle layout (2'D)D2' (Whyte-Notation: 4-8-8-4) and can drive a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The "Big Boy" locomotives were used in the period 1941 - 1957 for pulling freight trains. In 1959 the last locomotive of this series was used as a freight train. Until 1962, 4 locomotives were kept operational as spares.
