History - Quantity: 6 - Book

First French edition translated by Jean-Louis Carra of this important Hellenic work first published in England, devoted to the History of Ancient Greece. Complete edition in 6 volumes - decorated with two large folding maps in volume I - each covered with a beautiful binding of the time in fawn half-sheepskin, decorated smooth spine.

The first major Hellenic work published in England, the History of Ancient Greece was translated into French by Jean-Louis Carra. Born in Pont-de-Veyle in 1743, this adventurer traveled in Central Europe and the Middle East before being appointed to the Royal Library. An ardent revolutionary, he founded with Mercier the Annales patriotiques et littéraires de la France, a sheet which was very successful. Fallen with the Girondins, he was beheaded in 1793 (Cioranescu I, 15650 - Quérard III, p. 356 - Caratini, Dict. Des Personnages de la Révolution, p. 156).

The translator's preface sums up the general content of this work could not be better: "This story begins with the childhood of Greece, & describes the progressive & combined march of the different peoples of this region towards civilization and politics." The study covers 7 centuries, from the installation of the first Ionians in Asia Minor to the Eastern Empire of the Macedonians. The author combines both productions in the arts and literature and the history of governments and wars.

Beautiful set, bindings in good condition despite the usual rubbing on the caps and backs, more or less scattered rednesses inside (varies according to the pages), some yellowed leaves. Boards in very good condition with some foxing as well, mainly located in the margins.
