The Series D is an electric locomotive of the Swedish State Railways, “Statens Järnvägar” (SJ), that was built as from 1925 for the SJ, Bergslagernas Järnvägar and the Dalslands Jarnvag. These locomotives were produced during the period from 1925-1943. During the 1950s, new types such as the Series “Da” and the Series “Dm” were derived from these locomotives.
Development and deployment:
All locomotives were built by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA), the chassis and housing were supplied by ASJ-F, Motala Verkstad (MV), Kalmar Verkstad and Nohab. The locomotives of the construction series D were supplied with 4 types of housings:
Wooden housing with steel cabs - Type D (I).
All steel housing- Type D (II).
Du 2 housing - custom steel housings.
And housing for private companies.
The first types were D-locomotives that came with a wooden housing. These were referred to as the type D (I). The 134 locomotives of the Series D(I) that were delivered between 1925 and 1933 all had a wooden housing. They were equipped with front doors in the cabs and walkways for the driver. In 1977, the last locomotive of the Series D with a wooden housing was decommissioned.
After 1933 they altered the design to locomotives with a steel housing which were then referred to as the Series D(II). The steel housing was more durable and safer for the engineers. The steel housings were equipped with front doors in the cabs and walkways for the driver. In the 1960s the front doors were done away with. A total of 187 locomotives were delivered with a steel housing.
The Du2-type locomotives had a modified steel housing, with the front doors extending outwards and had a multi-train operating system. Red end-signal lights were also installed above the top headlights.
The 12 locomotives that were delivered to Bergslagernas Järnvägar (BJ) and Dalslands Jarnvag (DJ) had an enclosure with a sloping front. These locomotives were delivered without front doors.
The Series D locomotives were constructed with 3 different engine variants throughout the series. The original engine was a KJ 136 engine supplied by ASEA with a power output of 610 kW. The locomotives of the type Ds and Dg were also equipped with this type of engine. From 1936 onwards, the locomotives were delivered with an ASEA KJ 137 engine with a power output of 735 kW. These locomotives can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. These locomotives were referred to as the Dk Series.
In the 1950s, a new engine for the locomotives of the construction series D was developed and installed. This was the ASEA KJC 137 engine with a power output of 920 kW. These locomotives were then reclassified as the Series “Du”.
Several sub-series of the Series D were built, with the various sub-series disappearing with the passing of time as all locomotives after upgrading could run at a speed of 100 km/h. With the SJ, the following sub-series were in service:
Dg - original series.
Ds (159 units), later classified as Dk after conversion
Dg1 (186 units), converted locomotives with the ASEA KJ 137 engines.
Dk: 73 originally built locomotives of series D. + 44 converted locomotives
Du: 244 units of converted locomotives of the subseries Dk, Ds and Dg in which a powerful engine was installed.
Du2 : 162 units. Last upgrade effected between as from 1967-1976 in which multi-train control and roller bearings were installed.
Versions of the building series D for the Statens Järnvägar:
Dr: 2 units, trial locomotives where new drivetrain and lighter connecting rods were installed.
Df: 1 unit - a trial locomotive D 208 equipped with a multi-stage control for 120 km/h.
Dg2 1 unit, a trial locomotive Dg 136 was carried out with an axle onfiguration1'D1'.
