Mainline history:
The Series Ae 8/14 was commissioned by the Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) and built by the SLM and BBC. The locomotive 11851 was built by SLM and MFO. In the late 1920s there was a need for a powerful locomotive to be able to deal with heavy freight traffic on the Gotthardtbahn with its inclines of up to 27 percent. The required pulling power was so enormous that only a double locomotive unit could cope with these requirements. The SBB ordered the construction of a double locomotive that, with 8 axles and a weight of around 250 tonnes, could handle the freight traffic on the Gotthardt route and could be also used for passenger trains.
A total of 3 different prototypes of the Ae 8/14 series were built. The locomotives 11801 and 11851 were still similar in appearance, while the locomotive with running number 11852 had a very different appearance.
The locomotive has been tested and works well.
Signs of wear may be present. The plastic inner box has a notch on one side.
