Adolphe Thiers - Histoire de la révolution Française - 1841

Description
Adolphe Thiers - Histoire de la révolution Française - 1841
French Revolution - Quantity: 10 - tipped in plates - Book

Controversial history of the French Revolution, which was a huge success throughout the period of the Restoration, up to the second half of the nineteenth century.
Written by Thiers, a monarchist at the beginning, who ended his life as a conservative republican.
A bourgeois greedy for power and money, he represented the post-revolutionary rising bourgeoisie so well that the novelist Honoré de Balzac took him as a model for his ambitious young provincial, Rastignac.
FULL-PAGE TABLES engraved by Bosselman, Pelée, Geoffroy, Burdet, Moret, Hopwood, Lefèvre, Doherty, Girardet etc. after Raffet, Scheffer and Tony Johannot.

"In terms of political analysis, this work - a prodigious monument of history - continues to be a masterpiece".
Vicar, VII, 823.

CONTENTS
“It was Thiers, writes Aulard, who made the Revolution public. What Thiers wanted to establish was the assertion that the bourgeoisie was responsible for all the positive work of the Revolution. Excluding the crowd, "the multitude". But the bourgeoisie of Thiers is the petty bourgeoisie to which he himself originally belonged and this explains, with the genius of the author for the reductive simplicity, the great and lasting success of the work that seduced all those who considered themselves threatened by a possible return of the Ancien Régime. These "children of the Revolution", artisans, shopkeepers, small landowners, heirs of the "people" of the year II, while not sharing the maximalist objectives, remained attached to the revolutionary conquests.

The publication of the "History of the French Revolution" preceded that of the "History of the Consulate and of the Empire" by a few years. In THIERS's mind, the combination of these two works formed a natural whole in the historical continuity of this period from the end of the Ancien Régime to the fall of the Empire.

It is through the eyes of STENDHAL that THIERS follows Napoleon's lightning rush. Her daring moves dazzle him, her prodigious quality and energy captivate him. That this extraordinary man was able to do everything, even lose himself, never ceases to fascinate Thiers. Action hero, the fragility of his triumphs moves him as much as their greatness.

The political action of Adolphe Thiers covers almost the entire nineteenth century, from the monarchical Restoration, in the 1820s, to the Third Republic. He was its first president, from 31 August 1871 to 24 May 1873.
But Thiers was also a politician of rare intelligence, whom he himself took pains not to underestimate, and showed a great capacity to perceive the profound aspirations of French society. Bourgeois monarchist at first, he ended his life as a conservative republican, until he was overthrown by a coalition of monarchist deputies.
From 1823 to 1827 he published a History of the Revolution which earned him much praise and his election to the French Academy in 1833 and to the professorship in '38.
