Complete collection in one volume, of the two years and the only ones published of "La Lanterne Magique", 19th-century weekly newspaper, travel and fine arts, illustrated with many engravings by Louis-Paul-Pierre Dumont in the text, some issues have a tipped-in plate. Frontispiece in colour.

Work divided into two volumes, volume 1 is made up of 35 issues from the first year, from May to December 1857; the second volume contains numbers 36 to 65 of the second year, from January to July 1858. Each issue has its own title page, indicating the years 1860 and 1861.

Contains biographical notes on Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Galilée, Agnès Sorel, Napoléon I, Béranger, la Princesse de Lamballe, Fontenelle, François I... Also contains Alphonse de Lamartine, Graziella (first in 1852), spread over several issues, as well as: Amyot, Daphnis et Chloé ; C. Noël, Un amour de Goethe ; Miss Inchbald, Simple histoire ; Henry de Kock, Le Roi des étudiants : Spindler, Contes pour tous ; Auguste Maquet, La Maison du baigneur ; Kaufmann, Le Lantana des Batignolles (see Wikipedia)

Bound following "Album des Salons littéraire, artistique et musical", dated from 1861 and illustrated with a series of 35 plates of engravings after Gustave Doré entitled "Un Duel à Mort", the others based on Pierdon - preceded by 6 pages of sheet music including: duo de la Somnambule by Bellini; La chanson du petit Savoyard, Paroles by Mlle H. Rolland, music by J.-M. Chautagne; Fleur de Bohême, schottisch pour piano, by Frantz Liouville ; Air irlandais ; Ma Lampe, mélodie du comte d'Artd, music by Emile Gruber ; Estelle, polka pour piano, by Césaire Donat.

Contemporary binding in half red sheepskin, decorated smooth spine, gilded title and fillets. Percaline boards. Sound volume, light rubbing on the headcap and edges of the boards, blunt corners, faded boards. Angular dampstain that overflows on the text on pages 81 to 190 of the second year as well as on the half-title and the title, a torn leaf with fragment missing (see photos), some scattered foxing. Nevertheless in reasonable condition.

La Lanterne magique is a former French weekly newspaper, published on Saturdays. It was subtitled: Reproductions de chefs-d’œuvre de la peinture et de la littérature. It was launched on 2 May 1857 and was published until number 65 in August 1858. The publisher was Adolphe Delahays, the engravings by Louis-Paul-Pierre Dumont.

An attractive and rare publication, only published for two years.
