Esope - Nouveau recueil des fables d'Esope, mises en françois, avec le sens moral en quatre vers... - 1731

An extremely rare 18th century popular edition of Aesop's fables, illustrated with 221 lovely in text woodcuts (at the beginning of each fable), preceded by the life of Aesop which is illustrated with a portrait of the author.

According to the information in the catalogue of the Kâ-Mondo auction of Wednesday 13 February 2019 (lot 40), "this type of publication intended for young people was often worn out and destroyed: the collective catalogues have not allowed us to locate any preserved copies in France, and only 4 abroad (2 in the United States, 1 in Ireland and 1 in England)".

The frontispiece, signed VLS, is missing; several vignettes bear the signature “PS”.

Lovely period tan marbled calfskin binding, adorned ribbed spine, gilded compartments, mosaicked label. Red edges. Inside a tad yellowed, light foxing. Missing headcap, three pierced corners, scratches on the back cover. A sound volume, still in good condition.
