Magnificent and extraordinary specimen of the VIÑALES meteorite, which fell in Cuba on the 1st of February 2019, being one of the most recent meteorites that have fallen on Earth, and therefore with a high scientific value.
The specimen we offer is the largest one ever found from this fall, so it is the main mass of this meteorite. This fact makes its value to increase even more, being a meteorite worthy of the best museums in the world. It features a magnificent and complete fusion crust, well-defined regmaglypts in some parts, and a sculptural shape that allows it to be displayed in various positions. Simply SPECTACULAR!
A nice opportunity to add to your collection a piece of the most famous classified chondrite in the world. Chondrites are the oldest material in the Solar System, having an estimated formation age of 4,550 million years. A true gem of the Universe in your hands.
History: A bright fireball accompanied by strong sonic blasts flew over the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba, at 1:17 pm local time (18:17:10 UTC) on the 1st of February 2019. A long trail of smoke was also observed. Residents thought that a plane had crashed, as they heard explosions and then a ground noise that lasted for 15 to 20 seconds. A meteor shower fell on Valle de Viñales, a national monument since 1978 and a UNESCO world heritage site.
Physical features: Local residents collected hundreds of single samples. The stones are covered by a black fusion crust, with a white-grey interior with various shock veins. The stone masses are within a range from 2 to 1,100 g. In total, about 50 to 100 kg of the meteorite were collected, and it was catalogued as a Chondrite L6, after the corresponding scientific studies.
