** IJsbrand van Hamelsveld (Utrecht, 7 February 1743 - Amsterdam, 19 May 1812) was a Dutch theologian and politician.
He obtained his doctorate in theology in Utrecht and became a minister in Durgerdam. From there he went to Grootebroek, then to Goes. He had only been active in the latter place for two years, when some disputes caused him to resign from his ministry and move to Utrecht. In 1784 he was appointed professor of theology there. He was rector of the University of Utrecht in 1785 and 1786. In 1787, at the arrival of the Prussians, he was dismissed because of his Patriotic sympathies: he left Utrecht and settled in Durgerdam, later in Leiden, where he - already a doctor of theology - re-registered as a student on 31 March 1789, in order to acquire the privileges of the university and to ensure his protection by its privileges.
At the time of the revolution in 1795 he was offered the post of professor of theology, but there is no evidence that he accepted the offer. Shortly afterwards he was elected as a member of the first Nationale Vergadering; for a fortnight in December 1796 he held the chair. At the coup d'état of 1798 he and many of his fellow members were imprisoned for a while. Released from prison, he lived in Amsterdam with his son, in whose house he died on 19 May 1812.
