Extremely rare first edition, copy of the second print of "La Religieuse" by Diderot, without mention, identical to the first edition in 411 pages, 8vo format, at the address chez Buisson "An cinquième de la République". However the bibliographers indicate that two editions were published on the same date by the same publisher, this copy would be a print from England, without half title, and where only the paper and the typo differ slightly (especially the line on the title page, here double). 
Rare copy with the pink covers retained. Established in a binding of the early nineteenth century in full green iced calfskin, spine with raised bands, gilded bands framing the covers, spine with raised bands decorated with gilding. Joints and corners restored. Crisp and clean inside with some very light scattered foxing. Handwritten correction on page 292 " traita" instead of "triata". 

A memoir-novel begun in 1760, completed around 1780 and published posthumously in October 1796, twelve years after the author's death. ‎
An anticlerical work par excellence, La Religieuse is an ode to the freedom to choose one's own destiny.
Diderot puts coercive religious institutions on trial as contrary to true religion insofar as they lead individuals to earthly suffering and eternal damnation. The closed world leads to the degradation of human nature. Idleness, social uselessness, promiscuity gradually plunge the recluses into morbid or mystical reveries, then into madness and sometimes leads them to suicide.

We know the origin of this novel, a rather cruel joke made by Mrs.
d'Epinay and who had just welcomed the Marquis de Croismare. The latter was busy working on the
trial of a young girl who had been placed in a convent against her will. Diderot
was commissioned to write the letters of this young girl to the Marquis and to make her believe in her
escape. These letters constituted La religieuse. The novel will remain unfinished and Diderot, cautiously, has little
desire to publish it. In 1780, he modified his manuscript, correcting it. It was published
only after his death, in 1796, after the manuscript owned by the Grimm brothers.
