Enchiridion - 1840

Very rare edition of this famous book of occult magic published with the false address of Rome in 1740, according to Caillet printed in Lille by Blocquel around 1840.

Copy complete with the 7 plates engraved on wood and coloured by hand.
Plates on sturdy laid paper, text printed on fine laid paper.

“This little book contains, along with the most beautiful Christian prayers, the most hidden characters of the Kabbalah. The occult tradition attributes this little book to Leo III, and states that it was published by the Pontiff to Charlemagne as the rarest of all presents. The sovereign owner of this book, who knew how to use it, would be the master of the world. This tradition is perhaps not to be slighted.” see Eliphas Levi, Histoire de la Magie

Pope Leo III, elected in 795, was a great friend and courtier of Emperor Charlemagne. He was so fond of him that he gave him the keys of St. Peter and the banner of Rome, as well as this Enchiridion in which we can read in frontispiece: "Envoyé au Sérénissime Empereur Charlemagne par le Pape Léon, pour le rendre heureux dans tous les événements de la vie".

A handwritten letter from Charlemagne, written in Latin and kept at the Vatican Library in Rome, confirms the fact that all of the Emperor’s successes during his lifetime, private as well as military, as well as his good health, were due to reading and actively practicing the prayers and formulas printed in the grimoire offered by Saint Peter, and which Charlemagne had copied in golden letters to carry with him always.

To the pious prayers, psalms, litanies of the saints and quotations from the Gospel according to St. John, the Enchiridion adds the mysterious prayers of Pope Leo.
For example:
"Prayer against all kinds of charms, enchantments, spells, characters, visions, illusions, possessions, obsessions, evil impediment of marriage, and all that can happen to us by the evil of sorcerers or by the incursion of devils; and also very profitable against all kinds of misfortune that can be given to horses, mares, oxen, cows, sheep, sheep and other species of animals".

The work, filled with holy prayers, also includes strange figures, angelic seals, pentacles, secret names and other Kabbalistic signs whose assiduous use infallibly ensures the enjoyment of the goods of earth and heaven and the accession to paradise.
