MAGICIANS, HENCHMEN OF THE DEVIL, MESSENGERS OF HELL
Original 1668 edition.
The author describes magicians, henchmen of the devil, messengers of hell, who infect and contaminate the world with their diabolical inventions. [. ] " (Salgae, Of error and pregiudizis, tome II, ed. 1815, p. 413).
"Talismans and Magic Dust have wonderful effects. They say that by means of a Talisman, that is, a figure representing a star on a metal that corresponds to it - an army general, for example, with the figure of Mars - will be able to defeat his enemies. A courtier with the image of the sun will get the graces of the prince and all the favours he can desire. Gamblers will win anything they want with a mercury medal. Merchants will become rich in no time; and even the pickpockets can steal subtly with the same amulet."
"Original edition of this singular treatise directed against Kabbalistic practices and against the charlatans who use them" Caillet. In the second part, dedicated to "la poudre de sympathie", the author wonders "if two distant people could communicate with each other in some wonderful and secret way, without magical art, and by purely natural ways". Many animals communicate through the wonderful effects of sympathy, some dogs feel the accidents that happen to their masters, from which it follows that distant bodies can impress each other out of sympathy.
Controversial medicine was very fashionable in the 17th century. The "dust of sympathy", based on vitriol and alchemical and magical practices serves to "receive health from demons".
François Placet hypothesised that the continents had been united until the Great Flood, then America would separate from Africa by the sinking of the mythical Atlantis of which Plato had spoken (Buffon also agreed on this interpretation).
