Full vellum with defects (as pictured), golden title on the spine and pale blue edges. Large size, 43 x 28 cm. 96 plates, of which one folded. There are flaws, some pages slightly browned. Out of 111 pages, the title page and 2 sheets are missing (dedication to Leopold I of Austria in Italian and Latin), plus pages 32 to 34 (3 pages). Towards the last 10 pages (as pictured), water stains that do not affect the printed part, except the upper part of the folded print, with a small tear (as pictured).
Great reference work, unfortunately with the aforementioned flaws. The individual prints are for sale on the web at very high prices.
Andrea Pozzo was born in Trento in 1642, and in 1665, in Milan, he became a lay member of the Society of Jesus. Painter, theorist of perspective and architect, known throughout Europe. In Rome he carried out remarkable works, frescoing the vault and the apse of the church of Sant'Ignazio, where he had as a student his nephew Carlo Gaudenzio Mignocchi: remarkable is the Apotheosis of St. Ignatius, with its Melozzi-like perspective, that is "from below upwards". He traveled extensively and was active in Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Liguria, Rome from 1681 and finally landed in Austria in 1704. During his travels he did not fail to leave the tangible sign of his presence in the cities where he stopped: some works kept in Arezzo, Montepulciano, Modena and Como, places that saw the artist at work only for short and fleeting periods, still bear witness to this.
