Very beautiful bound set bringing together three titles from the important collection "Religious Art", the main work of the art historian and academician Emile Mâle (1862-1954). Our copy includes: L'Art religieux du xiie siècle en France (in original edition), L'Art religieux du xiiie siècle en France (5th edition) and L'Art religieux de la fin du Moyen Âge en France (2nd edition).
Luxurious binding signed F. Brochon executed in half-morocco with long-grained corners, ornate ribbed spine, laminated brown leather title labels. Preserved original covers.
Bindings in very lovely condition. Impeccable interiors, blankets with slight traces of handling. A very lovely copy. Numerous black illustrations in and out of text.
Émile Mâle was one of the first art historians, along with others of German language such as Alois Riegl, to transform art history into an internationally respected discipline. The art historian Jean Seznec was strongly influenced by his methodology.
His thesis Religious Art in the Thirteenth Century in France brought a major change in medieval studies and in the history of art. Its success is such that it is published a third time ten years after its first publication, which is exceptional for a book of this type. In 2011, there were no less than nine editions and numerous translations. This success he owes as much to the quality of his work as to that of his pen, which makes some say that he "had the art of making roses bloom on brambles". In this work, he lays nothing more or less than the foundations of a new method now commonly adopted by art historians.
The Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres awarded him the Gobert Prize in 1910 for his works L'Art religieux de la fin du Moyen Âge en France and L'Art religieux du xiiie siècle in France. (wikipedia)
