Salluste, Paolo Manuce, Christophe Plantin, Ciceron - C. Sallustii Crispi Conjuratio Catilinae et Bellum Jugurthinum. Oratio Sallustii in Ciceronem et alt - 1564
Rare. A very lovely reprint of the Conjuration de Catilina by Sallust, produced in Antwerp by Christophe Plantin, with some additional notes (Grasse 239).
A work published in Venice in 1563 by the humanist Paolo Manuzio (1512-1574), son of the famous Venetian printer Aldo, who was the first to use italic fonts and the 'pocket' format (octavo), and who printed the "Divine Comedy" prepared by Pietro Bembo.
For this "important" edition of Sallust, Paolo Manuzio used the manuscripts and compared Sallust with Greek writers in the notes.
Copy in a late 19th century Bradel style binding signed Thierry succ. de Simier, executed in ivory-coloured half vellum (parchment), spine adorned with a brown leather label with gilded title.
Work in very good condition, sound binding, the spine is a tad aged. Very fresh and clean inside, the title page is barely aged, the rest is impeccable, without foxing or water stains, some rare and very discreet signs of handling.
Provenance: J. W. H. Bettendorff (bookplate on the back of the title page).
