Beautiful hardbound copy of this beautiful book on the mores and landscapes of Brittany. Full burgundy morocco binding, spine adorned with a wide central band bearing the title in gilded stamping, accompanied by the author’s name and that of the illustrator. Covers and spines retained.
Rare first edition printed in only 225 copies, this is one of the 185 on Incunable des Vosges (N 186).
Book superbly illustrated by the Breton artist, Malo Renault (1870-1938) with watercoloured drawings in the text reproduced by Demoulins and coloured by Jean Soudé.
Malo Ranault participated in numerous exhibitions at the Salon Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1903 to 1928. He was a member from 1910. He took up the Art Nouveau style with a Japanese-style influence. Malo-Renault finds his inspiration in his native land, Saint-Malo and Brittany: the landscapes and Breton people are the main subjects of his pastels and his colour prints.
Very good copy, light white marks on the boards, the rest is in good condition. Fresh interior without any foxing, lightly yellowed leaves.
