The Legio XIIII Gemina played an important role in the imperial proclamation of Septimius Severus, which took place in Carnuntum (the legion's winter camp). As part of the Illyricus exercise led by Claudio Candido, he took part in both the expedition for Rome against Didius Iulianus and the expedition to the east against Pescennius Niger.
