Valentin Devoisins - Vues et portraits dessinés pendant l'expédition sur Constantine, en novembre 1836. Afrique du Nord - 1837

Very rare lithographed folio album (47 x 32) including an illustrated title and 10/14 plates drawn on location: view
of the interior of a Moorish home, inscriptions, portraits, view
of Constantine, views of the Guelma camp. The map and 3 plates are missing from this copy.

Copy preserved as it was published at the time, loose leaf in a blue paper cover printed in black. Everything preserved in a well-made modern portfolio in full cloth. Cover has a few tears in the spine. Some mildew. Some plates have micro tears in the border.

These illustrations were done during the
Constantine expedition of 1836, during which the French army,
commanded by Marshal Clauzel, governor general of
Algeria, failed to take the city. This heavy defeat had a
profound impact both in France and
internationally.
