Alexander‎ Pope‎ / Jonathan Swift, Blakey, Wale et Heyman - Œuvres diverses [Essai sur l'homme, La boucle de cheveux enlevée, Lettres (de) à Jonathan Swift...] - 1763

A lovely copy of this new, partly original edition of the translation of the works by the great English poet of the early 18th century, Alexander Pope (1688-1744). The translator was Elias de Joncourt (1697-1765). The first edition was published in 1754. This new edition is expanded with “several pieces and a life of the author.”

Illustrated with 1 portrait and 7 figures in volume I, 1 frontispiece and 6 figures in volume II, 6 figures in volume III; the figures drawn by Blakey, Wale and Heyman and engraved by Fritsch and Punt.

The last three volumes contain Pope's letters, including his correspondence with Jonathan Swift.

Volume 2 contains his famous didactic poem on the nature of man and his place in the universe, “Les principes de la morale, ou Essai sur l'homme" and the "Essai sur la critique" followed by "La boucle de cheveux enlevée", a graceful and libertine poem on the deities of love, sylphs and gnomes, who attend on young girls in their amorous emotions.

Well-made marbled sheepskin half bindings, smooth spines adorned with morocco mosaic labels and a rich gilded decoration, gilded fillets on the edges of the boards, marbled edges.

Pope was both the greatest classical poet of England in the first half of the 18th century, universally admired and acclaimed, and a philosopher renowned for his Essay on Man. His translation of Homer remains a classic in England. The compilation of his works in a quality edition was met with considerable success in Europe and had a certain influence in the world of letters.
