Condition: Missing headcap, joints in good condition, sound hinges, 1 blunt corner, ribbed spine adorned with gilded fleuron and title label, some worm holes in gthe margins of some sheets, nothing serious, red edges, ink bookplate on the title page and engraved bookplate. Complete.

Contents: A delightful edition of this work, whose considerable success “est une adaptation, quant au fond, de celui de Van Dale sur les oracles des anciens, écrit en latin [...] Fontenelle peut être revendiqué comme un précurseur de la Libre-Pensée. Le but que l'auteur se propose est de démontrer que les Oracles n'étaient qu'une fourberie des prêtes pour entretenir l'ignorance et exploiter la superstition des peuples." Fontenelle particularly attacked the prejudice that the common opinion about oracles strengthened the evidence for Christianity. Despite the meticulous precautions he had taken, Fontenelle was engaged in religious polemic.
