Complete work in two parts bound in one volume, beautiful interior, copy in very good condition, some friction on the binding.

Rare first edition of the first book on ventriloquism. "Ouvrage curieux, et le plus complet que nous ayons sur cette matière" (Quérard IV, 361). Also found in this volume (pp. 27-30 ) a letter from Mr d'Artus captain of the corpse of engineers, on the exercises of the diving suit (of September 7, 1770) (experiment conducted using a diving suit invented and manufactured according to the plans of Mr. de la Chapelle and tested in August 1770 in the waters of the Rhine - he will publish a work on the subject in 1774). "Ventriloquists are so named because they seem to bring their words out of the depths of their bellies. This art is due to a particular play of the muscles of the throat, a game that can be acquired by a constant and sustained exercise; but the sounds of ventriloquists articulated in the back of the mouth, why is it not related to the voice, as is usually done with the inner mouth? This comes, says the author of this Treatise, from our usual judgments, there is only experience that teaches us to judge by the eyes, the distance of objects; we also learn to judge by sounds.
