"The format and perhaps also the title of this book do not announce a book of scholarship, although it contains many of them. It is a review of the main traditions that formed the history or rather the fable of nature in the opinion of the Middle Ages, from Cosmas Indicopleustes to the still so inventive travellers of the sixteenth century. We can see from the work of Mr. Ferdinand Denis that he went to the sources of his information and that he read a prodigious number of books and manuscripts. He often and with enough breadth quotes works that have not yet been published, such as Brunetto Latini's Treasury, Jean Bonnet's Naturian Secrets, the Platearius; in all respects he demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the ancient literatures of Spain and Portugal."

The study is followed by important notes It is this part of his work that is recommended especially to the attention of scholars. He attached the reprint of the famous letter of the priest John which is found in all the encyclopedias of the Middle Ages, and the almost complete text of a little-known pamphlet on the origin of Y El Dorado, written in the sixteenth century by a Spanish monk called Fray Pedro Simon. Finally, the book ends with a bibliographic and analytical dictionary of all the cosmographers and teratographs of the Middle Ages and modern times.
