2001 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon - Margaret River, WA - 2 Bottles (0.75L)

In 2007 a bottle from the inaugural 1973 vintage of the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon (only 250 cases were made) sold at Langton’s for a record $2,301

Moss Wood is one of Australia’s iconic redwines, largely pre-sold and it's extremely rare to find an old bottle. It is rated as one of the 22 exceptional wines from Australia by "Langton’s Classification of Fine Wine". The average price of a bottle auctioned from 2001 is around 135€-170€.

Perhaps not surprising for a wine that is widely considered the benchmark Margaret River cabernet sauvignon and a standout on the world stage. Jancis Robinson reported that the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 was the pick of the night at a blind tasting of eleven 2001 Bordeaux-style blend wines organized for 36 wine lovers at the 2008 World Economic Forum. It beat some pretty serious competition, including the Napa Valley’s famed Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate and even Chateau Lafite! (Jancis Robinson MW on the Davos Tasting, reprinted in Moss Wood, Late Autumn News, Issue 66, May 2008)

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson: "Bright deep crimson. Sweet polished nose. But such opulence on the palate it tastes almost Californian except that note of acidity. Really refreshing. This would be great with food. Just a very slightly raw note on the finish".

97/100 Jeremy Oliver: "Alluringly deep, complex perfume of pristine small dark berries, mulberries and redcurrants, scented with violets, perfectly integrated cedar/mocha oak and a dusty suggestion of dark olives. Sumptuous, silky palate whose deep core of intense small dark berry flavour is lavishly coated with chocolate/vanilla/cedar oak and bound by supremely fine, satiny tannins. Suggestions of tar and prune reveal some slightly riper fruit, while its structure, power and integration stamp it as a significant wine, perhaps the finest Moss Wood ever".

97/100 Campbell Mattinson: "Reserved, young, raw, primary, somewhat closed and yet still managing to drive a clear wedge of class between it and the bulk of its competition. Fruit of ultimate, coiled purity, yet suggestive of complexity even in its extreme youth. Taut through its centre, yet even so its ripe, velvety, blackcurranty fruit is obvious. In many ways, the perfect, varietal, young cabernet. Drink: 2010-2026".

96/100 James Halliday, The Weekend Australian: "There is no doubt the 2001 vintage in Margaret River was outstanding, as even the normal hard to please Keith Mugford is happy to admit. Spotlessly clean this is a gorgeous, silky wine flooded with redcurrant, cassis and blackcurrant fruit in a web of fine tannins. Elegance personified and screwcap guarantees a very long life".
