The Fifth Republic, whose constitution was approved by referendum on September 18, 1958, did not officially begin until January 8, 1959, headed by President General de Gaulle.
This series of 1 Franc Gold coins bearing his effigy, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the creation of the new franc.
This was sometimes called franc Pinay and, more rarely, franc de Gaulle. The abbreviation was “NF” and appeared on all payment vouchers. On January 1, 1960, the new coins and banknotes were put into circulation.

The obverse of the coin depicts the right profile of General de Gaulle placed in the center of the coin. We see a legend around: REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE (bottom) CHARLES DE GAULLE (top) separated from the cross of Lorraine on each side and the initials of the engraver ER (Emile Rousseau).
For the reverse, we can observe a hexagon in the center with the value, the legend around: LIBERTE. EQUALITY. FRATERNITY and the dates 1958-1988.
The edge of the piece is smooth.
