Ansaldi - Principiorum legis Naturalis - 1742

LUXURIOUS FIRST EDITION OF ANSALDI'S PRE-ROMANTIC SCIENTIFIC AND PHILOSOPHICAL WORK
Important dry etched binding in embossed leather with gold designs and hand-coloured endpapers.
Interesting scientific work by Casto Innocenzio Ansaldi (1710 Piacenza - 1780 Turin), Italian professor and archaeologist. Rich in valuable ideas for a more careful understanding of the cultural climate of eighteenth-century Italy.
Restless, anti-scholastic thinker, he soon showed annoyance at the discipline and the system of studies then followed. The state of mind of these years is reflected in a continuous wandering, in contact with the new rationalistic and pre-Enlightenment cultural climate.

CONTENTS
Ansaldi already places himself in a direction of pre-romantic taste: he re-evaluates against the Enlightenment myth of the "good savage" the "imaginative" power of the cosmogonic poetry of the peoples of the ancient East, exalts the poetry of biblical prophetism (and his scholarly work is reflected here), of Milton, of Klopstock, and even of Dante's Paradise.

His teaching method provoked the distrust and hostility of his superiors, so much so that, as soon as he was appointed professor, the following year, A. saw himself abruptly recalled to Bologna.
From this moment the life of A. merges with his university career and with his work.
On a technical level, that is, of the method of investigation and criticism, his work was important for the study of Jewish antiquities, ancient religions and Christian antiquities.

Among his most important works, elaborated especially after the historical-erudite ones, we must remember: De principiorum legis naturalis traditione... libri, III, Mediolani 1742 (the one at auction), turned against the classics of seventeenth-century rationalism and attentive to the first fermentation of Enlightenment ideas in Italy, an exclusively "philosophical" moment, in which the need to positively oppose, on an ideological level, the mature phase of the movement at the beginning of the last quarter of the century, is clearer.
