Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) was a French playwright and poet of the seventeenth century.
His body of work, 32 plays in total, is varied: alongside comedies close to baroque aesthetics, full of theatrical invention such as L'Illusion comique, Pierre Corneille was able to give a brand new emotional and reflexive power to modern tragedy, which appeared in France in the middle of the seventeenth century.
