Accompanied by dozens of large-format illustrations, folded and on double page (60x43 cm) in which showing maps of the Mediterranean and Europe, bird's eye views of the cities and historical fortresses.
A fundamental work, printed for the first time in French by Calmet in 1722 and then reprinted dozens of times and translated into many languages.

Calmet is also famous for his "Dissertations on the apparitions of spirits, and on vampires, or the revenants of Hungary, Moravia and Silesia (Traité sur les apparitions des anges, des démons et des esprits et sur les revenants, et vampires de Hongrie, de Bohème, de Moravie et de Silésie) which infuriated the Enlightened Voltaire, who quoted him (in mockery) in his Dictionnaire philosophique.

Augustin Calmet 1672-1757, was known for his literal explanation of the Bible. This work set the standard in the field of biblical history. The first of its kind with a broad and literal historical explanation. Starting point for many biblical interpretations that followed.
Original in French: Dictionnaire historique et critique de la Bible, Paris, 1722-1728, 2 vol. m-fol. "Ces deux ouvrages capitaux ont été plusieurs fois réimprimés, et ont reçu des augmentations considérables".
Richly illustrated. Numerous maps, single and double page engravings by A. de Putter, F. van Bleyswyk, Ph. de Gunst. Complete!

Two parts in 2 volumes, in royal folio. Volume 1: (30) 92, 143, 321, 19 pp. Volume 2: [4] 504, [6] 230 pp. Later full leather bindings, golden spines with 6 raised bands; golden tooling on the edges. Label with gold titles and volume number. Complete with maps, single and double page engravings.
Restored in 1993 by the Kunstatelier Sint-Catharinadal in Oosterhout (NL). Some browning, reinforcements on a few pages without loss of text, some incorrect page numbers. Well-bound blocks of even colour.
A very beautiful and complete copy.
