First edition. This work, the author's most famous, which sketched a system of natural morality in which he affirmed the existence of an innate morality, independent of religion, had been condemned as soon as it was published.

This very audacious book for the time, and which scratched in passing some famous personalities, was the subject of many criticisms and refutations, in particular those of Abbé Richard and Father Nonotte -

Binding in decent condition, work in its half marbled fawn sheepskin of the time, plates and spine in decent condition, nevertheless a small tear visible on the head of the spine, smooth spine, gilding, red title label, cardboard covers, red tinted edges -

Inside in good condition, nice frontispiece and vignette on the title page. Small wormholes in the central part out of text, damp stain on the title page, the last page of the first book was unbound because of the verses, otherwise in a fair condition -
