Spain. Fernando VII (1813-1833). 1 Duro 1808. Gerona - Escasa

Fernando VII. 1 Duro coin, 1808. Gerona. Unique coin and year of mintage. Silver, 26.27 g. Scarce.

Struck during Napoleon's invasion, at a temporary mint set up in Gerona, free from the occupation, but isolated by Napoleon's troops.

Before the siege of the city, in December 1808, the local council of Gerona decided to strike its own currency and ordered the seizure of silver from individuals and churches. The silver was demanded on several occasions; the first time, a third of silver that was owned, and the second time, a half of what remained.
