In 1954 the Dutch Railways (NS) placed an order for electric multiple units due to the rapidly progressing electrification of the main lines.
At the NS, these trainsets were referred to as "Material 54".
Because of their striking head shape, they soon got the nickname "Dog's Head".
A total of 68 two-piece ELD2 trainsets were delivered to the NS. These were mainly deployed in the InterCity services.
