O/L "Cows crossing the water", Carl Trägårdh (1861 – 1899)
Swedish painter who lived in France

Carl Trägårdh's artistic output focuses on pastoral and landscape scenes. Most of them are currently in Swedish museums such as the Gothenburg Museum of Fine Arts, Waldermasudde Museum, Nationalmuseum, Lund University and the museums of Kristianstad, Norrköping, Uddevalla, Värmland and Luleå.

His technique follows the spirit of the Impressionist movement, a pictorial style that emerged in France at the end of the nineteenth century, characterized by wanting to capture a specific moment, and with it, a certain light. To this end, a quick brushstroke is necessary, and a mastery of the theory of complementary colors. The Impressionist painters pursue a neutral look, without hierarchy in terms of what is represented, thus breaking with the academic painting that prevailed throughout the century.

In Cows crossing the water is represented, as is characteristic of his work, a pastoral scene that captures the precise moment in which a group of cows cross a river. The technique is fast, the brushstroke spontaneous and material, the elements dispense with the drawing, since they are created through the volume. The composition is well studied and also derives from impressionist ideas, in the foreground appears a trimmed tree, of oriental influence. This element introduces us to the work, and serves as a reference for the depth that the painting takes, since in the background more cows are represented grazing.

The treatment of light is exquisite, it can be seen on the surface of the river, where the rays of light that sneak between the trees and affect the water shine in a special way.

Along with the white and yellow used for light, in this painting the green tone predominates, which is complemented by the orange and mauve touches scattered throughout the surface. In this way, the colors are reinforced between them and the result is a harmonious work, despite the fragmentation of the brushstroke.

In the lower corner of the left is signed and dedicated, in dark green tone, as was usual in the artist.

Original frame of the time with three gallons carved with pearl, rockery and bay leaves.
