Biography of Rafael Estrany i Ros (Mataró, 1884 - Barcelona, 1958):
He was born on October 14th, 1884, in Mataró, Barcelona.
He began his training at Mataró’s school of arts and crafts, as a student of Josep Vinardell. He continued his studies in the Academia Baixas in Barcelona, where he established contact with Joaquín Torres and Ismael Smith. Later, he went to Paris to study at the famous Académia Julien and to Belgium, where he met James Ensor, from whom he received fruitful lessons.
He held more than sixty individual exhibitions and participated in other national and international collective exhibitions in Mexico, Panama, Rome and in several itinerant exhibitions in museums in the United States, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, London, Venice and Madrid.
He was awarded in several national exhibitions in Madrid and Catalonia, at San Jordi’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes, Agrupación de Acuarelistas de Cataluña and international exhibitions in Mexico and Panama. In 1915 he was awarded with a grant by the Dirección General de Bellas Artes del Estado.
His quality ais internationally recognized and he is considered as one of the best Catalan painters of the 20th century.
He passed away in Barcelona on the 17th of January 1958
