Born in Verdun, settled in Leiden, then in Brussels and Louvain, Jean Nicolas de Parival wrote his book to expose the sufferings of war. Only his assessments of the French characters can be useful: if Mazarin is praised, Richelieu is a "Tiberius" who made the French feel "that he was a fox", the "worthy instrument of the bloody games and the main engine of this furious ball which has been danced for so long among the Christians".
