Wine of the Year - "The Best of the Year" by Revista de Vinhoswill be remembered for its intense heat and historically low rainfall levels. Despite the dry weather, flowering and budding developed under favorable conditions and, in August and September, high temperatures during the day and cool at night, allowed for uniform and gradual maturation. The decision to start harvesting early, at the perfect time of ripening, allowed the grapes to be received in ideal conditions with fantastic natural acidity. The harvest at the Vale de Mendiz winery started on August 24, under perfect weather conditions, with the musts showing an intense color and a strong character. The last grapes were harvested on September 26th. Production decreased by about 30% over a normal year, essentially due to dehydration.
VINIFICATION
All components of Porto Vintage 2017 were stepped on foot, in granite mills with 100% stems. The wines were transferred shortly after the harvest, aging in the Douro, in vats, during the winter. They were subsequently transferred, in March 2018, to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
TEST RESULTS
The appearance is marked by a wonderful dark purple border and a great depth of color. The aroma is dominated by young black fruits. It is powerful on the initial palate, leading to a fresh medium palate with very seductive black fruit flavors. A great combination of power and elegance, with a bold, dry and long finish. The admirable structure of Vintage 2017 promises a wine with great aging potential.
