Jacques Fouilloux & Pierre Harmont - La Vénerie & Le Miroir de Fauconnerie - 1650

Superb set; “Du Fouilloux lived under the reign of Charles IX, to whom his superb book is dedicated. He was a passionate and experienced hunter. years of the first publication show how its popularity has been maintained" (Schwerdt). - Vers II: first published in 1567. "It is still among the rarest French works on the subject"-

Followed by a small practical manual on the choice, training, care and feeding of birds of prey for hunting, by Louis XIII's falconer, first published in 1620. "Copies of this work [ in any edition] are very difficult to obtain" (Harting).
The hunting scene on the title page, which has no related illustration in the first edition or in d'Arcussia, shows two men in the foreground, one blowing a horn and holding a dog on a leash, the another holding a falcon and with peddling paraphernalia. It shows falcons attacking birds in the sky, and a hunting scene with dogs and men on horseback chasing a deer in the background -

Good condition of the binding, work in its full contemporary vellum, good condition of the covers and spine, small soiling from use and rubbing on the covers, some slight losses in the corners and on the upper cover, solid binding, in a recent casing as well as its box -

Varied interior condition, some dirt, rubbing, and wetting, missing the title page of Fouilloux's book as well as the engraving of King Charles before the dedication to King Charles. Some dirt, wetting and light repairs following some tears, nicely done. Correct overall condition, missing page 7, 57, 83, lack of paper at the bottom of page 9, 12 and 33, horizontal tear on page 54 and 67, presence of 56 magnificent woodcuts -
For the work "The mirror of Falconry", presence of 10 pages out of 38 the last having the top of the page missing with slight loss of text. Presence of 7 woodcuts -
