Elaboration:

1 year in large wooden tanks where it ferments and rests before being racked for subsequent aging. It matures between 9 and 10 years in used 225-litre American oak barrels. Subjected between 2 and 3 manual rackings each year by the barrel-to-barrel method. Clarified before bottling. A minimum of 8 years of aging in the bottle rack in the cellar cellars before being marketed.

1955 Clarete Fino Vieja Reserva

This Bodegas Bilbaínas Vieja Reserva from 1955, one of those wines that were made in the past in La Rioja, ten years of aging in barrels and many others in the bottle in the cellars of the winery, something unfortunately unthinkable today. Let the wine breathe for two and a half hours and proceeded to assess it at 17.5°C.

Shows an impressive cherry red color with a medium-high layer (note that it is a 55!) with a wide rim and an ocher-brick tonality.

On the nose, overwhelms you with intense fungal fragrances of black truffle and dried figs. Stirring the glass aromas of damp leaves, withered flower, attic and mothballs, the bottom of the closet, powder, with some fine spices of allspice and clove. It develops into herbs laurel, black tea, animal notes and an extensive more tertiary patina appear dark chocolate, wine staves, roasted coffee, old leather, pipe tobacco and a woody background of much quality where oak shows itself majestically. What a delicacy on the nose, breathtaking in complexity and medium-high intensity,

Something exceptional on the palate, tremendous attack, high acidity and but at the same time velvety and creamy. Very fine tannins that time has shaped that provides extreme elegance. Develops to a reminiscence of fig bread and prunes as well as subtle and delicious highly sweetened woody notes.

In the aftertaste is where it captivates you with its delicacy and with those old notes of attic and humidity seasoned with an exceptional truffle touch. It persists in the mouth for three minutes and twenty seconds of pure delight. Once again the miracle has occurred and after an exceptional harvest and 20 years of pampering and exquisite care, the grape and the wood have come together in a heavenly balance, forming a single entity, a single soul. What a gem of a wine, the exceptional vintage of 55, inexorably demonstrated with examples like this one. Amazing what our beloved masters from La Rioja were able to create in those marvelous 50s.
