Hand-coloured engraving originates from William MacGillivray’s and Georges Cuvier’s work “Edinburgh journal of natural history and of the physical sciences. The Animal Kingdom of Baron Cuvier“, published in Edinburgh, 1835. William MacGillivray (1796-1852) was a Scottish ornithologist and botanist known for his contributions to the study of birds and plant life. He worked extensively on the classification of bird species and collaborated with prominent scientists of his time, including Georges Cuvier. Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) was a French zoologist and paleontologist, born in Montbéliard, who became a baron. He was the first to study paleontology as a zoological science and is often regarded as the father of comparative anatomy, having reconstructed entire skeletons of previously unknown quadrupeds. Cuvier improved Carl von Linné's sexual system in taxonomy and believed that animal anatomy adhered to fundamental natural laws similar to physical laws.
