Vol. 59 (1910); XIV, 536 pp., 5 (of 9) chromolithographed plates (numbered 1579-1587, lacking nrs. 1579-1581, 1583), num. text illustrations. One plate (1584/1585) is a double page spread, one plate folded. Half leather over marbled boards; gilt title on spine; little wear on the boards, spine worn; back hinge loose. Vol. 60 (1911); VIII, 1-136, 17-32, 137-528 pp., 4 (of 4) chromolithographed plates (numbered 1588-1591, plate 1588/1589 is a large, folded, double plate). The inserted pages 17-32 are from Orchis: Mitteilungen des Orchideenausschusses der Deutschen Gartenbau-Gesellschaft (nr. 2 vol. V, 15. März 1911) Pebbled cloth; gilt title on spine; corners bumped; back hinge loose, back board stained. Three good volumes of this interesting magazine, with nice plates. Two vols. are incomplete, missing plates, one vol. is complete. *Carl Ludwig Max Wittmack (1839 – 1929) was a German botanist. In 1874, he became affiliated with the University of Berlin. He was professor of Botany at the Agricultural College in Berlin (1880-1913), professor of botany at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Berlin (1880-1920), director of the Experiment Station of the Association of German Müller (1875-1905), a member of the department for seed cultivation in the German Agricultural Society (1883-1924), and Director of the Agricultural Institute (1889-91 and 1910-13). From 1887, he was editor of the magazine Gartenflora (from the Vereins zur Beförderung des Gartenbaues in den preussischen Staaten), founded in 1852 by the German botanist Eduard August von Regel. ** This lot is part of an important collection that will be auctioned in the coming months through the Catawiki Collection Service.
