About the Estate
The history of Pape-Clément dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, then Archbishop of Bordeaux, received these lands as a gift. Elected Pope in 1306, he took the name Clement V and renamed his property "Pape Clément," before bequeathing it to the Bordeaux clergy, who retained the production for their own consumption. After the Revolution, the estate underwent a long succession of owners, which seemed to slowly lead it into decline. A painful hailstorm in 1937 nearly ended its legend. Fortunately, the land was purchased in 1939 by agricultural engineer Paul Montagne, who heralded the estate's revival by replanting the vines and renovating the cellars, before handing over to his son Léo. From 1953 onwards, successful vintages flourished again, but once again, starting in 1975, a lack of investment hampered quality for about ten years.
It was the arrival of Bernard Magrez, an iconic Bordeaux figure, as co-owner in 1985 that marked the definitive return to high-level production, a boom now reinforced by the talents of the renowned consulting oenologist, Michel Rolland. Rolland practices separate vinification, a guarantee of complexity and refinement for the wine: the grapes from the different plots are vinified in separate vats to allow them to fully express their specificities before blending.
Benefiting from the same microclimate as its neighbor, Château Haut Brion, Pape Clément produces highly aromatic, supple, and incredibly refined red wines. The large proportion of Merlot, the source of a remarkable velvety texture, makes them accessible even in their youth, although their aging potential is exceptional in great vintages.
About the cuvée
This blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle is crafted with the same care as its predecessor. Hand-harvested, barrel-fermented, stirred, and aged on lees for 10 months to a year, the wine displays impressive flavor and aromatic richness. Notes of citrus, white fruits, and exotic fruits are evident. The dense and smooth texture makes it an appealing pairing for dishes with sauces.
