Description from the seller
Imposing and fascinating, this specimen of Charonia Tritonis – also known as the 'giant Triton' – is one of the most iconic shells. Originating from the waters of Madagascar, it stands out for its exceptional size and the sculptural structure of the shell, with well-defined whorls and an open mouth with orange-amber tones that fade into a wavy cream-colored edge with brown streaks.
The back features a lively and irregular texture, with flame-like patterns and concentric bands that appear hand-painted, typical of high-quality specimens. The apex still shows a slight natural purple hue, indicating the freshness and integrity of the specimen.
La Charonia tritonis is also known for its ecological role: it is one of the few natural predators of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci), which devastates coral reefs. This makes it a symbol of balance and protection of the sea.
Curiosity: In many cultures of the Pacific and Indian Ocean, the giant toadfish was used as a ritual wind instrument, capable of emitting a deep and resonant sound, similar to the call of the sea.
