- Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980) was a Polish-born painter and one of the most emblematic figures of the Art Deco movement. Known as the “Baroness with a Brush,” she gained international recognition during the 1920s and 1930s for her sleek, stylized portraits and sensuous nudes, characterized by sharp lines, sculptural forms, and a modern elegance that reflected the cosmopolitan spirit of her era. Her style, blending Cubist structure with neoclassical polish, epitomized the glamour and sophistication of interwar Europe.

Lempicka’s works have achieved great prestige and value in the art market. Her paintings are held in major museums and private collections, while at auction, they have repeatedly reached multimillion-dollar results. For instance, her painting Portrait de Marjorie Ferry (1932) sold for over $21 million in 2020 at a famous auction house, underscoring the strength and desirability of her oeuvre. Collectors prize her ability to capture the essence of modernity, sensuality, and female empowerment in a uniquely recognizable style.

One of her important early works, Rythme (1924), exemplifies Lempicka’s Art Deco aesthetic and her fascination with the female form. The painting portrays a group of nude women, arranged almost like sculptural figures, their bodies intertwined in harmonious rhythm. A cellist adds a musical dimension, suggesting the fusion of art, music, and sensuality. The composition is defined by bold contours, luminous skin tones, and a balance between intimacy and monumentality. The draped green fabric in the background enhances the theatrical atmosphere, while the women’s strong poses convey both sensuality and empowerment.
