This Art Deco baluster vase designed by Charles Catteau for Keramis Boch Frères combines sculptural form with a vivid craquelure glaze and authentic factory marks from La Louvière.
Description from the seller
Beautiful Art Deco decorative elegant belly-shaped baluster / calabash vase in crackle glazed polychrome earthenware, designed by master potter Charles Catteau for Boch Fréres Keramis.
A stylized flower composition/pattern in various attractive, vibrant colors on an ivory-colored background with an azure blue upper and lower collar.
Charles Catteau (1880-1966) brought about a revolution in ceramic art during the heyday of Art Deco with his bold creations. This vase is a striking example of his talent for uniting form and function in a purely decorative way.
The playful, symmetrical motifs are characteristic of Catteau's aesthetics, where ornamentation never overpowers functionality. The skillfully applied enamel gives the artwork a glossy finish, allowing the shades of green, orange, yellow, brown, and black to be displayed in a timeless manner. The discreet signature of Catteau and the marks of the factory of the brothers Boch in La Louvière attest to the authenticity and origin of this artisanal vase.
This vase is not only a sought-after collector's item but also a testament to the stylistic and technical innovations of the Art Deco era. It embodies the perfect balance between the artistic movement of that time and everyday functionality. It is an object that is as practical as it is aesthetic.
The base at the bottom of the vase is stamped with an indented mold number 1271 - Decor D2516 design number; black factory stamp 'KERAMIS Made in Belgium'.
There is also No. 23, which was probably the decorator/painter's number.
Made in La Louvière, Belgium, in the year 1934.
Very good condition with minimal signs of use, which are consistent with its age and craftsmanship (see photos).
Mention in the reference book 'Art Deco Ceramics made in Belgium Charles Catteau' by Marc Pairon.
Dimensions:
Height approximately 24 cm – Weight approximately 1250 g.
Top diameter +/- 11 cm – Base +/- 10 cm
