After the successful V200, a single-engine diesel locomotive was planned in the mid-1950s to replace the still numerous steam locomotives of series 03, 23, 38, and 50 on non-electrified lines. The nine pre-production models produced by Krupp still had a rounded front (which earned the locomotive the nickname 'Lollo'), which was replaced in the series production by the angular shape, simpler and cheaper to produce. The V 160 was powered by a 1,900 hp 16-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz or Maybach. From 1964, the V 160s were built by Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei, and MaK.
