This edition of the Iliad, printed in Greek, by the Norman humanist Adrien Turnebe (1512-1565), professor at the Collège de France and the King's printer for Greek in 1551. This is the first Parisian edition of the Iliad, considered a milestone in Homeric scholarship. Colophon: "Excvdebatvr Lutetiæ Parisiorvm M.D.LIIII. III Cal. IV L." Full leather binding with gilt title and decorations to spine, boards with gilt acorn decorations to corners of ruled borders. All edges gilt. Wear to exterior as shown with joints cracked, front board nearly detached, some marks/scuffs to leather, mostly around spine. Front board verso with bookplate of Lord Sandys. Title page with first two words of title transliterated from the Greek, woodcut printer's device. Red ruled borders throughout and woodcut initials. Pages collate as complete. Light age toning, otherwise pages are generally very clean as shown. Pages: [alpha]², A-Z⁸, a-l⁸, m⁶.
