A silver 1916 Portuguese escudo from the early Republic, featuring the first shield design and legible details that appeal to historical coin collectors.
Description from the seller
Rare Portuguese silver coin issued in 1916, during the First Portuguese Republic. This piece represents the first type of "Escudo," which replaced the Real after the monetary reform of 1911. It is a highly sought-after coin by collectors due to its historical value and beautiful classic republican design.
Technical features
Country: Portugal
Face value: 1 Escudo
Year: 1916
Metal: Silver (.835)
Edge: Serrated
Front
Effigy of the Republic, symbolized by a woman with a Phrygian cap, facing left, surrounded by the inscription "REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA" and the year "1916" at the bottom.
Reverso
The Portuguese national coat of arms within a wreath of laurel and oak branches. At the bottom, the face value “1 ESCUDO”.
The coin shows moderate signs of circulation, with slight wear in the higher areas of the relief (mainly on the face and shield), but still with clear details and well-defined contours. The legend is perfectly legible on both sides. Minor marks and superficial oxidation consistent with its age.

An excellent example for collectors of coins from the First Republic.
The date 1916 is considered to have a relatively low minting rate.
