AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Biscuit porcelain figure from the late 19th century, with inscription 'Bisson Hussard, Fleurus 1794'. With a stamp on the underside and a sticker from 'J. van Crombrugghe Bronzes, Gand'. In good condition. The lower part of the saber appears to have been added later.

Height 29 cm, weight 1162 grams.

The Battle of Fleurus on June 26, 1794, was a battlefield in the Low Countries during the First Coalition War. During the battle, a French army of more than 70,000 men under General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan clashed at Fleurus in Hainaut with a Coalition army consisting of, among others, Austrians, South Netherlanders, and also North Netherlanders under Frederik Jozias van Saksen-Coburg-Saalfeld. Through a more effective concentration of troops, the French managed to decisively defeat the Coalition army. The allied defeat led to the definitive loss of independence for the Southern Netherlands under the Habsburg monarchy and, shortly thereafter, the fall of the (northern) Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
