Early XXth C. Linen bed linen with C.H. initials. - Textile - 3.2 m - 2.2 m

This bed linen in linen comes from the same source as various others which have been shown recently. The owners of a nearby feudal chateau have been accumulating an increasing number of linen going back 3 generations. Their children and siblings are not interested in antique bed and table linen. So little by little I have been able to acquire some magnificent pieces which have from time to time decked the beds in the many bedrooms of the chateau. By this I mean on very few occasions as at the time washing machines were not available yet. So the staff would have gone down to the local stream with wickerwork baskets full of beautiful pieces and pounded the linen against the large smooth rocks to be cleaned with of course every time slightly damaging the linen. So instead of using superb pieces to deck all the beds, much more simple bed linen would have been used and only on very special occasion the dowry ( trousseaux) pieces would come out of the armoires. Hence we are so privileged to obtain these wonderful pieces as they are all still in a magnificent condition. This piece is certainly witness of it. The border has a wealth of what appear to be small compositions of wheat sheaves, a very popular design in the early 20's In between the wheat sheaves is a three tier open thread work Ajour de Venise. The sides of the bed linen continue with the same design by 50cm. The initials C.H. are partly embroidered in high relief and partly outlined and filled in with "pinhead embroidery". The letters are adorned with entwined wheat sheaves. The edgings have a simple open thread work. Finally the bed linen at 2m20 wide will deck a bed at approx; 1m80 and you will still have 20cm on either side. Enjoy perusing the bed linen.
