Naoya Hatakeyama - Two Mountains, Naoya Hatakeyama, Balthasar Burkhard - 2008

A dialogue between two photographers from Japan and Switzerland, each focusing on the theme of mountains. This is the official catalogue for an exhibition in which two photographers, Hatakeyama Naoya from Japan and Balthasar Burckhardt from Switzerland, swapped countries and explored the universal presence of mountains in their different cultures and landscapes. Hatakeyama traveled to the Jungfrau and Valais regions of Switzerland, photographing the theme of "the human gaze toward the mountains." Burckhardt dynamically captured the symbolism of Japan's mountains, where faith and nature overlap, in Kumano and Mount Koya. This book visualizes the thoughts and visions surrounding mountains from a Japanese and Swiss perspective. Balthasar Burkhard (1944–2010) Born December 24, 1944, in Bern, Switzerland. He began his career as a photographer in the early 1960s, working at the Kunstmuseum Bern. In the late 1960s, he documented Harald Szeemann's groundbreaking exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form" (1969, Kunsthalle Bern), and subsequently became known for his interdisciplinary approach to art and photography. In the 1970s, he spent time in the United States, where he used a large-format camera to create large-format monochrome prints of architecture, urban landscapes, and the human body. Since the 1980s, he has lived in Zurich, exploring the scale and materiality of photography through his work on urban structures, nature, and animals. He passed away in Bern on April 16, 2010. Naoya Hatakeyama (1958-) Born in 1958 in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. He graduated from the Graduate School of Art and Design at the University of Tsukuba in 1984. He has spent many years photographing the changes that human activity brings to landscapes such as cities, nature, and construction sites. His early masterpiece, "Lime Works," captures the massive scale of limestone quarries and human labor, while his subsequent works, such as "Underground" and "Blast," meticulously document landscapes where industrial structure and the forces of nature intersect. He lost his family home in the tsunami that struck his hometown of Rikuzentakata in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then, he has explored the relationship between memory and landscape through his photographs of the disaster-stricken areas in series such as "Kesen River," "Rikuzentakata," and "Tsunami Tree." In 1997, he received the 22nd Kimura Ihei Photography Award. He has held numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, and in 2012 he held a large-scale solo exhibition, "Natural Stories," at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. His works, which question the coexistence of humans and the environment, and the temporality of landscapes, have received international acclaim. - [ ] 【Important Information】 - [ ] ・International customers are responsible for any import duties, taxes, and fees not included in the item price or shipping costs.
