AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Cornelis (Kees) Bol (1916-2009) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. In 1944, Bol began his training as a visual artist, initially by taking drawing lessons with Jan Heesters in Schijndel, and subsequently by attending the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague as an apprentice. There, he was among other students a pupil of Paul Citroen and Henk Meijer.

In addition to being an independent painter and draftsman, he was affiliated as a teacher at the Art Academy in The Hague from 1963 to 1972. From 1951 to 1972, he was also a teacher at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven. Until 1970, Bol lived in Eindhoven, after which he resided in Heusden until his death in 2009.

In this vibrant gouache on cardboard, Kees Bol showcases his characteristic style in which simplicity, color, and rhythm merge into a harmonious composition. It depicts a rural house hidden behind blooming trees, with the distinctive red shutters and doors that add a warm accent within the soft spring colors.

The brushwork is loose and energetic; broad strokes in green, blue, and brown suggest movement and light without emphasizing detail. Bol manages to capture the atmosphere of an early spring day with minimal means – fresh, open, and full of anticipation.

This artwork comes from the collection of the Eindhoven Museum. As part of the transition to Museumpark Vonk, selected works are being disposed of so that the museum can fully focus on the history and identity of Eindhoven.
