First presented in 1955, the exhibition aims to be a manifesto for peace and the fundamental equality of men through post-war humanist photography. The works of authors are staged in a modernist and spectacular manner. After a journey around the world through more than 160 museums, the final complete version of the exhibition was permanently installed in 1994 at Château de Clervaux in France; since its creation, The Family of Man has attracted over 10 million visitors and thus entered the history of photography as a legendary exhibition. Since 2003, it has been included among the documents registered in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. The exhibition was conceived by Edward Steichen as a collection of snapshots and emotions aimed at conveying a message of peace during the Cold War (but during the Korean War with the presence of the American army...).
This book gathers 503 images from 68 different countries that Steichen describes as "a mirror of the essential unity of humanity around the world. Photographs taken from all parts of the world, covering the entire spectrum of life, from birth to death. Photographs of lovers, of marriage, and of procreation. Photographs concerning human dreams and aspirations, as well as photographs of the blazing creative forces of love and truth, and the corrosive evil inherent in lies."
All the greatest photographers of the 20th century from around the world are represented here, including: Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugène Atget, Richard Avedon, Werner Bischof, Édouard Boubat, Margaret Bourke-White, Bill Brandt, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Brassaï, Harry Callahan, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Roy DeCarava, Robert Doisneau, David Douglas Duncan, Elliott Erwitt, Andreas Feininger, Robert Frank, Ernst Haas, Frank Horvat, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Izis, Dorothea Lange, Helen Levitt, Jean Marquis, Lee Miller, Lisette Model, Gordon Parks, Irving Penn, Willy Ronis, August Sander, David Seymour, Gotthard Schuh, William Eugene Smith, Edward Steichen, Jakob Tuggener, Ed van der Elsken, Pierre Verger, Roman Vishniac, Sabine Weiss, Edward Weston, Garry Winogrand, etc.
Book from my personal collection, in excellent overall condition with minor age and usage wear on the dust jacket and small tears without missing parts (see photo); the dust jacket also has a small alignment defect in the printing as the title on the back is slightly offset. The book has been carefully preserved, with the dust jacket now protected in a transparent Mylar cover. Shipping is very securely protected with guaranteed international postal tracking. For multiple purchases, combined shipping is possible with a refund of any overpaid postage via PayPal.
